Robbie Katter is trying to make it harder for Queenslanders to access abortion care in the first nine weeks of pregnancy.
His disallowance motion would roll back changes which allow nurses and midwives to prescribe medication abortion in Queensland. Medication abortion is safe and common but requires health professionals to prescribe it within the first nine weeks of pregnancy.
Robbie Katter’s changes would mean fewer health professionals able to provide the care, and result in more delays, costs, and travel away from home and family for Queenslanders seeking abortion care.
This move will hit Queenslanders living in regional and remote areas hardest. In many communities nurses are essential providers of timely healthcare. Access to medication abortion in the first 9 weeks can mean the difference between Queenslanders getting care close to come or having to travel hundreds of kilometres, take time away from their jobs and family, and find money for fuel, childcare, and accommodation.
Queensland MPs need to hear from us NOW before the motion is voted on next Tuesday June 2.
