I am writing to you as my local representative, to urge you to please support the creation of safe access zones in SA, and to back full patient protections by opposing any amendments exempting 'silent prayer'.

It’s my strong belief that people deserve privacy and dignity when accessing healthcare.

And I’m aware that without such protections, patients and staff experience harassment and intimidation from picketers - who cause great distress to patients, and security concerns for staff.

While I recognise that everyone is entitled to their opinion, I don't believe that people should have the right to interfere with decisions someone else has made about their own healthcare. Or to harass patients, invade their privacy and cause them distress.

I’m also aware that laws to decriminalise abortion may soon be brought before parliament and I also wanted to share my strong support for the reform of South Australia’s abortion laws in line with the recommendations made by the South Australian Law Reform Institute.

I am extremely concerned that South Australia’s current laws prevent many women from accessing early medication abortion, delay and complicate their care, disproportionately harm women living in rural areas, and cause hardship and additional anguish for those experiencing the distressing circumstances that lead to needing abortion care later in pregnancy.

As your constituent, I urge you to support both safe access zones that protect patient dignity and privacy, and laws for safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care.
