I’m writing as a member of the community who is deeply concerned about the ongoing impact of the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) discount on women.

I strongly urge you to champion meaningful reform in this area. That means not just watering down the amount of discount provided from 50% to 33%; but ending special treatment for property investors entirely; and beginning to deal with the damage this unfair tax setting has done to our housing security, and to gender inequality.

In particular; I am concerned that any decision by the Albanese Government to ‘grandfather’ the rule will lock in the unfair advantage being given to those with existing wealth; and not do nearly enough to change the distorted system for those who are particularly harmed by the housing crisis - including women.

Right now many women who have contributed so much to our communities are locked out of home ownership and stuck in an increasingly unaffordable rental market.

The gender pay gap, time spent out of the paid workforce due to caring responsibilities, and over-representation in part-time work all mean women on average accumulate less wealth; and are deeply impacted by the housing crisis.

For women experiencing abuse and violence - housing and economic security are inseparable. When there is nowhere safe or affordable housing to access to go, escaping abuse at home becomes far more difficult.

I’m outraged that the Capital Gains tax discount redirects billions in public revenue that can and should be invested in things that make our communities stronger, safer and better for everyone - things like healthcare, education, aged care, public housing, and domestic and sexual violence support services.

This unfair tax setting is contributing to inequality in the housing system and worsening outcomes for women. This is a gendered issue that demands action.

As part of your government’s commitment to women and to gender equality; I urge you to support meaningful reform to the Capital Gains Tax Discount - to end the special treatment and public subsidies for property investors (not just water them down).
