Stop the Religious Discrimination Bill in the Senate

Imagine your child being kicked out of school for their sexual orientation or gender expression, or having to endure a workmate who tells you your “disability is caused by the devil”. Or staff at your daycare centre saying to a single mum “every child should have a mother and father who are married”. And then imagine these statements being immune from legal consequences under hard fought for discrimination laws across the country.

This could be our reality if the latest version of the Religious Discrimination Bill passes through Federal Parliament. It passed the House of Representatives after an all night debate, and is heading to the Senate.

I am writing urgently with great concern about the Religious Discrimination Bill due to come before the Senate - and to implore you to stand up for laws that unite us, not divide us.

I expect you to be championing the right for all Australian to live their lives free of discrimination. To be treated equally. But this Bill would create a hierarchy of rights and a basis to discriminate against many in our community, particularly LGBTIQ+ people, women and people with disability.

I urge you to use your vote to oppose this Bill in its current form - and to oppose any amended version that doesn’t ensure that standards of protection are raised for everyone, while maintaining existing protections.

Specifically, I implore you to support amendments to: 
- Remove the provisions that override existing anti-discrimination protections, 
- To strengthen changes to the Sex Discrimination Act to ensure they protect not only LGBTQ+ students, but also staff 
- Ensure that qualifying bodies can effectively regulate members of their profession and maintain public trust and confidence,
- Ensure that in-home aged care providers cannot discriminate based on religion against the people who rely on their service, and
- Protect against hate speech

I am deeply concerned that without these changes the Bill will take us backwards, and wind back hard-fought rights for women, people with disability, LGBTIQ+ people and people of faith, while compromising judgement-free access to healthcare, and safe and inclusive schools and workplaces.

I’m calling on you to please stand up for a fair and equal Australia and refuse to support any form of the Bill that would reverse hard-won progress towards equality. That means voting against any version of the Bill that doesn’t include all of the above amendments.

I strongly believe any Religious Discrimination Bill must protect people against discrimination, without preferencing the rights of people of faith at the expense of the human rights of others.
