Stop the attack on South Australian Abortion laws 2026

Former One Nation member turned independent politician Sarah Game has (again) introduced legislation that would restrict doctors from providing the best possible care to women and pregnant people - effectively banning them from providing abortion care later in pregnancy.

Under this bill, politicians would determine what healthcare can be accessed after 24 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. The would prevent a doctor providing abortion care in South Australiaafter 24 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy unless a woman’s life was in immediate danger.

This would mean politicians interfering with and overriding the decisions of a woman and her medical team.

A woman may need access to abortion care later in pregnancy for a range of complex, distressing and deeply personal reasons. She might have received heartbreaking news about a wanted pregnancy. She may have been given a catastrophic diagnosis (such as cancer) and told she can’t be treated while pregnant. Or she may have experienced abuse or violence that stopped her from accessing services earlier, from an abuser trying to use a pregnancy to trap her in the relationship.

Medical decisions should be guided by doctors - not dictated to us by politicians.

This bill was introduced into  SA’s Upper House on May 20. It could be voted on as soon as June 2. It is vital that the members of the Legislative Council hear that the public don’t want them restricting South Australia’s current abortion laws.

A number of the representatives in the Upper House are newly elected, and have never voted on abortion care issues before. The ALP, Liberal Party and One Nation party all treat abortion care as a personal ‘conscience’ vote, meaning that individual MPs decide how they want to vote. We may not have the numbers in the upper house to defeat the bill. This means community pressure really matters.

Last year South Australians worked together to defeat a similar bill introduced by Sarah Game - and community pressure played a key role.

After hearing from medical experts, the community, and religious leaders, former MLC Jin Lee changed her position - telling parliament that she recognised that restricting abortion care later in pregnancy would cause more suffering and harm.

Please add your voice today and urge Legislative Council Members to reject this bill and protect South Australia’s current abortion laws.
