Dear Minister,

I am deeply concerned that so many women around our country remain unable to access the specialist service support that they need to escape domestic or family violence; and to begin healing after sexual assault.

In these moments of crisis - governments should be ensuring that any woman reaching out for support can get it.

I am dismayed and distressed to hear that the federal and state governments aren't currently providing enough funding for specialist domestic and family violence services to support all the people who need it. This is a national crisis. Women are being murdered. Listening to women includes listening when they say they need support to be safe.

I’m also horrified that rape survivors are being forced to wait months to access sexual assault counselling. Governments are encouraging people to reach out and to contact 1800 RESPECT. But if someone’s call cannot be connected to a service that is funded to provide support within a reasonable timeframe, is that encouragement genuinely helping?

I urge you to use all available moments, to push for meaningful, sustained increased investment in specialist sexual, domestic and family violence services across governments.

Budgets are about priorities. I know your Government is shaping its budget priorities right now. I wanted to let you know that during this national crisis - I expect women’s safety and wellbeing after abuse to be up the top of your government's agenda. And also that you have my support to champion this issue within all discussions happening within and across governments.

I would appreciate more information from you about your government's plan to ensure women impacted by domestic, family and sexual violence can access services when and where they need them - and address the current gaps in the service safety net that should exist.
